Hi
Have a problem with a m8s pre-built computer. For some reason its not showing the DVD ide drive.
This is in the Bios, so the same in Windows XP. All connections are ok and the pc is working fine apart from this. I have been into the Bios and searched in the setting, reset the cmos, reinstalled the Bios & tried two other drives but still no joy. it’s a Compaq Presario S6150UK with a MSI6575 motherboard.
I was going to order myself a new rig when the price cuts are here, but if I can not fix this  LOL.
Grateful for any advise.

Check to see if the IDE connection going to the drive is Master or Slave (marked on IDE ribbon.). Check to see if the corresponding settings are set on the drive (check the jumpers ).

If no drives at all work then either the IDE cable is damaged or the IDE channel on the motherboard is borked.

Looking at the specs for that mobo I can see only 2 IDE channels. Remove the cable for the hdd and plug in the cable for the cd drive. You certainly will be able to see if the drive is seen in the bios.

Thanks for fast reply dUcKy.
yes. done all that and tried a new cable but still no joy. Sorry should have said in my post but great ideas thks

footman When I did that, the dvd did show and the harddrive did'nt. do you think the connection on the board has gone then

Well, you could have course put the hdd cable into the original channel the cd drive was plugged in to (what terrible English !)

Then see if it boots into Windows.

No post when I did that footman, (changed the ide between dvd and harddrive) the harddrive didnt show in the Bios. But I can rule out the cable and the dvd drive which are showing in the Bios now.
I guess the ide connection has gone on the motherboard
unless there is anything else I can try?
