Any internet connection options in awful internet area?

Hi

I'm based around Kidderminster for the forseeable and the 'best' internet I can get is 30Mb down and 3Mb up. There are no immediate plans I can see to build and I'm also on a private road which probably doesn't help.

Are there any alternatives. I don't mind paying £100-150 per month if it got me a decent connection. Starlink seemed to be an option but the companies I've been working with won't allow it under trust concerns (this may well change in the future).

Thanks.

M.

I just have:

Openreach FTTP is planned
Airband is planned
Full Fibre Ltd is local
Hyperoptic is local
Virgin Media is unknown local

What sort of speeds do you need? Would two FTTC lines bonded be enough?

Well, the main problem is that I used to be in a Gb area - so had 900Mb down and 300Mb up. Realistically, yes I could bond a probably 3 connections together to get almost 90Mb down and 9Mb up but it seems that the maximum is two and relatively expensive for that with no idea on how quick it will be (assume, in my case, it would be 60Mb down and 6Mb up) based on the link. Is that all the options there is?

Thanks,

M.

What about a SIM WiFi router with unlimited plan.

This would be my suggestion too. Check to see which cell towers are in the area to see the best provider and go from there. I was previously paying £16/month for Three and achieving 80Mbps Down with 10 Up all day long with a reasonable 25ms latency.

From the options you have and your requirements for say 100 up, you're in leased line territory. Unfortunately they cost a fair wedge more than £150.

Gigaclear not in your area??
Sadly not according to there website

The signal isn't great even for normal phone signals - I have a small 4G router so I'll try it again but I end up using WiFi calling instead of the 'normal' signal

Yeah that's my thoughts - though I can't find anything reasonable - it's just ridiculous money for such a small amount of bandwidth :(

Well, you have a number of options.
You can go for 4G, get another phone line, or go Starlink.
The problem with the second phone line is that you don't have long before BT start switching off the exchanges anyway. But at least with two lines you would get double the speed for a while.

Now this happened when Gigaclear first came out but I asked my road by flyer if they would sign up as an interested party if they covered our lane...
It worked. (We were, back then, stuck in 4mb down.

By the way, my area was "planned" and I used to ask Openreach every year when it was happening. Last year, a week after I asked, they still said "in the next five years" and then I saw their vans in the street. I phoned them up and they still denied it! A week later I was on fttp. The point being you never actually know when they will make it available. Their website and staff don't help.
Oh, and within six months of Openreach going fttp, Virgin appeared as well. Now we have a choice!!

My Brother in Law had an awful BT internet speed and a few months ago I decided to do a 5G test at his house and it was 850mbps.
It was all alien to him but for the last 2 months he's now on a Three Router at £10 for the first 6 months and then £20 a month unlimited.
He put the router in his living room where he gets (ONLY :)) 550mbps but that does feed the whole of his house and kids playing on games machines.
I'm so jealous.
Did a speed test in my office at the hospital and got 970mbps then realised a new 5G tower had been put up about 100 yards away.

My partner has 5G on EE but the signal in this house isn't great. I'll try and grab her phone an do a walk around - I doubt we'll get anywhere near 500Mb but anything has to be better than this. I've hassled and gone on to the mailing lists for OpenReach - I've done the same with Gigaclear. I've looked into even getting fibre put in but, again, it's so expensive and as we're not classed as rural we don't get any financial help in putting it in. The road I'm in has around 10 houses and at least 4 of them would want faster internet but they wouldn't want the bill to run it.

An external aerial will also be much better than anything internal if you’re serious. There’s a big 5G thread in this section with loads of good info as well.

Give the https://one.network site a look.

You might have to sign up for an account, I'm not sure. But it shows all the road works going on in your area. You can see if there are any Internet type of companies building in the surrounding area.
