Ive been having issue for a fair while with my 2013 2.0 MK7 Golf GTI Automatic (85,500 miles) I went to a local garage today and the guy put it on the diagnostics and it come out with these faults, he seemed to say straightaway pretty much it was a chain issue without a proper inspection (just opened bonnet and looked) and would cost about £1,000 to fix.

Also as time has gone on I have started getting ESP light come on but intermittent I can go days without seeing it, my problems are mainly at slow speed the car seems to over rev and sometimes stall even at idle will do the same, also pulling out of a junction the car seem to go and then like jolt if that makes sense like loss of power but again this is random.

I have watched Youtube videos and done abit of digging and it could well be other issues then just the chain that at fault.

I have extended warranty on the car with Allianz so im hoping I will be covered but that another issue I need to find out about.

Could it be a faulty camshaft position sensor that needs replacing? I seem to remember YouTuber Mat Armstrong had that problem with his Lamborghini Gallardo and it was an intermittent fault that meant the car sometimes wouldn't start, or would cut out when it got hot and then not start.

EDIT - Actually it might have been his crankshaft position sensor.

I would ask this question on specialist VW Golf forums.

Then see if you can get a UK VW independent specialist to look at it for a second opinion. I expect it is quite common.

Just to add I once had a faulty sensor in my car, and this made the car over-rev. Might have been a DPF sensor. Anyway, the point is that a faulty sensor can make a car over-rev, because it feeds back incorrect information to the ECU. However, it might not be this, it could be mechanical too.

may be of some use or not, ive just rebuilt the top end of a galaxy tdi new shape and replaced the chain and tensioner between the camshafts when it was all together and running ,it sometimes maybe one in ten times failed to start or seemed to run over .
when i scanned it it came up with similar message although diesel, cam problem bank blah blah, injector timing over advanced,
after some checks and head scratching i determined if i unplugged the cam sensor and replugged it in ,fault went away for a day. so i replaced the sensor with a new one and touch wood fault went.
by the way you can scan with many tools and sometimes they pick up different faults or none at all.
forscan originally said fault, launch said no fault ,thinkscan said no fault so maybe a glitch.

Guy at work said DPF but mine not a diesel point could still be true about a sensor though, but looking at Youtube video it could be quite a few other factors to.

Im going to get it into a VW dealer next week hopefully, as I have to use my Allianz extended warranty with a VW dealer so we shall see what they say hopefully not to much expense.

When camshaft and crankshaft position sensors start to go you get all sorts of different errors..

I replaced quite a few on some of my old cars, pretty much every E36 I owned always got a new camshaft position and crankshaft sensors. Only 20 quid a piece tho.

You can do some checks with VCDS, but unfortunately its not possible to monitor the signal waveform like you can on BMW's...

yep my crankshaft position sensor on e36 religiously caused warm-restart issues (getting the old one out was the b***** lot of +gas soaking and eventually levered against pulley)

what is the service/inspection interval on the chain(or belt?) - had demanded a printed doc showing details when I recently bought a 2nd hand vag(audi) to accompany service records,
and justify why it hadn't been changed.

An update to this I had the camshaft position sensor replaced and fault went from garage diagnostics, and I havnt seen any issue been over a week now so we shall see.

However it seems to be one issue after the other now! tonight driving home this morning was fine I smelt burning smell come through vents after I stopped I had the aircon on etc. I thought it was just the smell from another vehicle as I was at a petrol station.

Ive smelt all the wheel areas and the rear passenger side tyre area is where the smell is coming from do people think its a seized caliper or brake pads or disk gone?

Im sure ive had this issue before but cant remember ive had the car since new its 2013 plate.
