An update for anyone interested:

Despite the glowing reviews, I've found the FiiO Snowsky Echo Mini to be rather meh to say the least. The N95 8GB trounces it for music playback sound quality especially in bass with my earphones (going for the bass booster preset on the FiiO to try and compete produces distortion, and the mid-range still sounds comparatively 'muddy' to me).

I've since looked in to a setting on my N95 8GB that make a big difference - Stereo Widening (and to a much lesser extent Loudness). I've not seen these settings on any phones I've had or MP3 players I've tried over the years except the N95.

Looking in to Stereo Widening, apparently that now exists in apps like PowerAmp for Android as Stereo Expansion. I've downloaded the free trial of PowerAmp, and lo and behold, ramping up Stereo Expansion (and bass and treble) on my Xiaomi Mi Note 10 is now producing music quality playback that has hints of not just matching but overtaking the N95 8GB (!!!).

Except one problem: amongst the great playback at such settings, there is a bunch of crackling ruining the experience, especially when connected to a stereo / subwoofer + soundbar (not so bad with earphones weirdly).

My experiments will continue...
