I'm normally one to try and keep my system as up to date as possible, but I'm currently wondering if theres any need to update my system at the moment.

Current specs are:

Intel QX6800 @ 2.93GHz
Asus Striker Extreme
2GB Ram
2 x Western Digital Caviar Blue 80GB in Raid 0
2 x DVD-RW
2 x 8800GTX graphics cards
Custom watercooling
Mountainmods Case

It still plays games perfectly on my 24" monitor, but I'm worried that when future games come out its going to struggle. So is there any point in me upgrading at the moment, or should I wait for the next big thing to come out (core i7 maybe ?) before splashing out some cash.

Why would you upgrade? What's to upgrade? Unless you wanted to change your CPU or something to a newer varient...

Hell, I should be the one asking if I need to upgrade or not :p

I'm asking because my machine is over a year old now and normally thats quite old for a gaming machine. Wasn't sure if I would get any benefit of upgrading bits in the system.

Unless it's struggling with what you want to do with it, then I personally wouldn't.

I guess if you really want to buy something, then I'd get some more memory, 2GB is going to be a little bit limiting with some of todays apps & games.

If it doesnt struggle now then I wouldnt bother, you can always upgrade when it does actually start to struggle. Its not like you have to plan ahead much, you can order parts with next day delivery when you actually need them. By waiting until you actually need to upgrade you are bnound to get more for your money.

There is nothing wrong with your rig. In fact you have more power than most of us here. If you want more power then get that QX6800 clocked!! :D

Yeah I do need to do that, but lack of time has stopped me since I upgraded all my cooling.

I'm feeling like a bit of an idiot posting this up now, but I thought after a year there would be something needing an upgrade!

just the ram but if you're not using any programs games that require more ram why buy it now - wait till you need it and probably save yourself some money, especially with how ram prices are falling

What about an OS upgrade for me then? Would moving to Vista make any difference in games ? I know that I would need to go to Vista for DX10, but havent really paid attention to what games are supporting it yet.

Performance could even go down. Vista has more overheads. I hated it so went back to XP. I personally could'nt see much of a difference between DX9 and 10 either.

Before anyone flames me, this is my own opinion which i am completely entitled to.

Actually post-sp1 you will find that there is only a difference of 1-2Fps from what ive been able to tell. Then again i use Windows Server 2008 so ive got the vista crap removed :P

Vista won't be a problem on a power rig like that. There are a couple of dozen games that support DX10, so it may be worth it. I don't know how much it improves the look of a game though.

Bleeding 'eck though, that must have cost you a pretty penny a year ago.

Think at the time that build set me back about £2300. Since then I moved the case into the mountain mods one and dumped my old WC kit for a custom dual-loop one. All in I've propably blown over £3000 on this in a year (I broke quite a few bits by tinkering :D)

I think I'll see if I can find a list of games which support it and then make my mind up.
