Any new AM2, not AM2+, likely

Before I consider a Black Edition as a final upgrade, is there any new AM2 processors likely?

I can't use AM2+ or Phenom due to incompatible motherboard. And as it's a Shuttle system I can't replace the motherboard. Not replacing system yet due to cost of the barebones.

Are you 100% sure it's incompatible? It's designed to be completely backward compatible with the older socket. AM2+ CPUs on AM2 mobos should work just fine. Similarly AM2 CPUs on AM2+ mobos should also work just fine.

In your case you'd simply be limited to HT 2.0 rather than 3.0.

sorry to hijack the thread slightly, but if i have a am2 3800+ single core, and buy a 5000+ black edition dual core, will i have to reformat my pc? or might it take it without asking questions?

It'll be a case of drop it in and it'll work, you might have to re-set the BIOS but Windows will be fine.

hi all!
i just downloaded a beta bios for my asus mobo and it seemed to cure a lot of probs with my 5200+. i only mention it because there may be an update for your mobo too which may enable you to use a phenom etc...
just a thought, if you havn't already tried it mate.

Only read of one person's attempt with a Phenom, and machine wouldn't boot. Manufacturer has stated Phenom won't work, and has decided to discontinue product.

Only reason I bought AM2 was due to longer socket life than Intel, who seem to release a new chipsets every few months.

thanks, just popped it in a few mins ago and all seems good, windows recognised new hardware told me i needed a restart and bingo it was done :P

Phenom backwards compatability has largely not materialised, only asus & asrock have really come through on AM2 boards & not on all. A few other manufacturers have done the odd one but generally most AM2 do not & will never take a phenom. I blame the mobo manufacturers more than amd. That said, if they were going to advertise compatability they ought to have retained a means of compelling mobo manufacturers to provide it.
Anyway, I was bothered for a bit but I realised the 6400+ (non black which includes a good heatpipe cooler) would probably be better for my needs anyway. So I've got a good system & worry about new stuff in a year or two.

It's often down to the manufacturer to release a BIOS update for Phenom, something which few seem to have done. :(

there are obviously hardware limitations involved as well though (aforementioned size of BIOS, PWM perhaps not upto quad core etc.).
If it was that easy to just add the support it would have been done by more mobo manufacturers on more mobos.

Obviously i'm not a motherboard programmer, so I don't know exactly, but i'm sure it's been said that almost or just about all AM2 boards can support Phenom. :)
