Someone has offered to buy my pc stuff and since im off to uni (and have to travel country to get there :/) I have sold it.

So I have a bit of cash in my hand as a result (around £500) with which to buy a pc with. (I have monitor, case keyboards etc).

When would be the best time to buy a pc? Is it now? I have a Rampage II Extreme motherboard lying around from a failed i7 build. Is now the best time to buy i7 stuff?

Basically a general lay of the market would be great.

thanks

As always things are always changing.

The latest set of i5/i7 chips have come out, bringing new motherboard sets for the new skt. These chips I believe are to cover the more mid range of builds. Whilst the pre-existing i7's cover the enthusiast and high end builds.

ATI recently announced their next wave of Graphics cards, due to arrive towards the end of the month. These will be the first set of DX11 cards avaliable.
Not sure what's happening with NVidia but I would imagine they will be showcasing their newest offerings very soon.

All of this new kit is bound to push down the prices of the current hardware on the market. So personally I'd wait it out a little bit and see how things turn out.

Considering you already have a rampage 2 "lying around", it would be practically criminal not to use it.

An i7 build minus motherboard for £500 will be more powerful than £500 on any other platform including the motherboard.

Well the 5850 and 5870 are due out on the 22nd os i'ld say atleast wait till then, even if you can't afford one for this build there may be a price drop for Nvidia's current top cards.
