Any news on 7800 xt?

Anyone starting to suspect that the 7900 GRE is AMD testing the waters for what's going to be the 7800 XT?

$649 for a card that near enough matches the 4070 or at best beats it by a 10'ish percent.

Trying to pull an Nvidia i suspect.

7800xt unveiled by Powercolor

It has 25% less cores than the 7900GRE but the same memory configuration and clocks

Given the 7900gre is only 10% faster than a 6800xt, it's looking like the 7800xt will either be on par or slower than the 6800xt. The 7800xt is a replacement for the 6800 and imo should be priced at $399

Here are the qHD figures for the RX7900GRE:

The RTX4070/RX6800XT are 88% of the RX7900GRE,which makes it around 14% faster overall. The same review puts the RX7900XT at 24% faster than the RX7900GRE.

But if you look at the TFLOPs difference:

Only a 12% difference, showing Navi 31 is severely constrained by the memory subsystem,ie,only 72% of the memory bandwidth of the RX7900XT.

The RX7800XT has the same memory bandwidth, and the core is also clocked higher. If it is more balanced of a core WRT to memory bandwidth it might possibly be closer at lower resolutions.

However,as the RX7900GRE is at $650 already I can't see it beating an RTX4070. So whatever price the RX7800XT is,it needs to be cheaper, unless OFC the core actually clocks closer to 3GHZ during games.

Apologies for my dimness, what do you mean dumping the navi32 dies?

Oops,I meant Navi 31 dies not Navi 32 and the RX7900GRE.

AMD might have produced too many of them, and have a bunch of defective dies to get rid off. So are making a weird SKU which is neither here nor there and dumping it in China and to some system integrators.

I remember, many years ago they made the HD7870LE/HD7870XT,which used a cut down large die in a similar way:

It was only slightly faster than the midrange HD7870:

The HD7870LE/HD7870XT was not much faster than the HD7870 and it appeared to be unbalanced in specifications.

I couldn't work that out either the GRE card is a Navi31 die.

Someone has got to have got their wires crossed, noway a new mid range card is going to be slower then the card it's nominally replacing. I reckon the specs that were quoted are for a 7800 non XT and the XT will feature the full Navi32 die.

A 7800XT being on par with a 6800XT is completely embarrassing,it's pointless even releasing it

Only real benefit will be that it uses less power. That's exactly what Nvidia is doing as well. I'd guess that the 7800xt will end up using 100w less in games than the 6800xt, so yeah instead of more performance AMD just gives you lower power draw which is exactly what Nvidia is doing with everything under the 4070ti

Nvidia 4xxx also has DLSS3, which gives a huge "performance" increase over corresponding 3xxx cards. Not really, but it counts for marketing purposes and it is useful. Especially for hobbled underpowered cards. Like most of the 4000 series.

AMD 7xxx has better ray tracing than the 6xxx cards, but that's not counting for much.
