Any news on a new Atom ?

Hi,

Thinking of getting a file serer but just wanted to check, any news on a new Atom as they have been out for a while now. checked and there are rumours something might be coming out September, this true ?

The new desktop Atoms will not be release until jan next year going by the current plans.

Gone will be the old 945GC chipset which uses load of power and generates more heat than the Atom itself.

Currently the Atom platform is;

Atom CPU + 945GC Northbridgw + ICH7 Southbridge

The new CPU platform integrates the CPU and Northbrige so it will be

Atom D410 / D510 CPU + Tigerton Southbridge

I'm not sure if Nvidia will find a way to interface the new chips with one of thier MCPs so it is likely Ion will be stuck with the older Atoms. Which is the way Intel want it.

yeah bit annoying current atom chipsets run hotter and more wattage than the cpu itself !

ION 2 is going to both Intel and VIA. I am very much looking forward to VIA Nano ION 2. VIA Nano's cpu is a lot more capable!

Probably as Intel don't want Atom to be too capable.
