Any nightshift workers?

doing 3 on 3 off 11pm to 8am at the moment, been at it since oct 2014 and to be honest i really dont fancy doing it much past the end of next year.

as a couple have pointed out its not good for you long term health wise also lack of sunlight can mess with your head then add on noisy neighbours and its all fun and games.

if it opens up opportunities for a better job down the line or you need the cash now to save up take it but maybe think about where you could be in 12 months to 2 years.

Kenny, just noticed you start at 5am Sunday anyway? You have no Saturday night with that start time.

Yeah and live a 40min motorway journey from work. So im up at 3:45am so really, i would only be going into work 5 hours early to get away early, im used to going to sleep during the day and getting 2/3 hours at night before getting up. Hmmmmmm

I don't mind the occasional stints of 6pm-6am shifts but the novelty quickly wears off if I do them for more than a few weeks, I usually do 5 or 6 days at a time which is exhausting on days never mind nights

Been working permanent nights for 17 years now, couldn't work normal hours anymore, nights suit me more than days.

I work nights, start around 15:00 and finish between 03:00 - 06:00 depending on where I go, I'm an hgv driver and love the empty ish roads at night, motorway closures for overnight road works can be a pain but I enjoy it.

I used to do 3am starts but found I got next to no sleep at night, now if I finish at say 4am, I'm home by 4:15 food, beer chill out to some cack on iPlayer or have an hour on GTA V then go to bed and sleep like a baby until 12 - 13:00.

Suits me.

I mostly worked from 11pm to 7am - 7 on then 3 off for the last few years up until three weeks ago.

I'd agree with the others, I was constantly tired and it seemed like I had a cold for the entire three years. I now feel well rested even though I'm probably sleeping less, and I'm much happier (it seems that I was a bit of a grump!).

I do 3 on 4 off nights.
Not too bad, it was a role promotion and a hefty wage increase.
I don't find that I'm too tired, probably because I have more recovery time.

Done a week of 12 hour nights lately, 5.30 pm - 5.30 am. Wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. Got another few nights coming up soon. First night was definitely the hardest but soon got used to it.

I liked night duty or at least I did until we got a new boss and they moved me to a new site. I did 4 on 4 off 12 hour shifts which were a bit much for me and I've just handed in my notice now.
Staying awake can be a problem but then that's probably due the length of my shift as much as it has to do with nights.

I like nights but i do monday to Thursday.

Nice ling weekends.

Those days theyr offering you i wouldnt do unles si really needed tbe money

Shift worker here.

4 on and 4 off.

2 day shifts straight into 2 night shifts (all 12hrs). Total working year 154 shifts.

Love it.

Currently work this pattern for the winter months, summer shift pattern is even better and have worked like this for 18yrs. Various shift patterns worked for over 30yrs. I prefer nights because I sleep much better, but I know it doesn't suit everyone. Research suggests that working shifts causes health issues and I cannot disagree

Yeah I'd be up for that.

I do 4pm- 0230ish every other week with dayshift inbetween, usually have a few beers and games after nights to unwind, I can't get in from work ready to climb into bed.

Until I go away which is 3 weeks solid of 12 hour nights followed by 24hrs off and 3 weeks of days, rinse and repeat till its time to come home!

Used to do it as a temp for Royal Mail as a kid in their sorting offices, was either 6pm-6am or 10pm-6am

Both exhausting what with being on your feet all night...

TBH some people can cope, others can't. I did 8pm-8am for about 9 months but this was stacking shelves and for only 15% extra. Monday-Friday so you basically lost your Saturday as well. This was when I was 21 so it sucked and I quit as they wouldn't put me back on a normal shift when I asked. It messes you up. We're not supposed to work at night and sleep in the day. And all those daytime activities people think is completely normal like cutting the grass, pressure washing the car, screaming kids playing football outside, cars having the nuts revved off them etc all REALLY get on your nerves.

FWIW I found having something to eat before I slept really helped me settle and sleep longer. Personally once on it most other people won't want to do it so you'll have a real struggle getting away from it if you don't like it or can't settle.

Do the same, with holidays thrown in it's decent.

I used to love it, probably because I could sleep on nights, but now I hate it. I struggle to get back into a decent sleeping pattern and it just ruins my *4* days off (it's really 3).

But then the days off are nice, and the quietness at nights is worthwhile.
