re the CPU, we don't want to overclock it (far too much potential hassle for me;)), so i'll suggest the 4400 to him and see what he says about it.

I'll also look into the cooler and ram, although with regards to the ram i must admit I tend to stick to crucial as i've never had a problem with it.

thanks to everyone for their advice :)

the bits arrived this morning, and i've set it up (it's currently running tests in my room), very nice, pretty quiet and getting a fairly good 3dmark2006 score at stock speeds (about 3780)
