Any offline alternatives to fortnite battle royale?

Hi all

I have a 11 year old who desperately wanted to play fortnite battle royale but we have a really slow internet connection and last week I had to take the laptop into work to download the 17Gb it needed to install the game. All was well but today it wants to download another 1.5Gb update and so I have got to take it back into work tomorrow. This is ridiculous if it keeps wanting to download these massive updates each week. It refuses to start until you have downloaded the update too.

Are there any games similar to it that I can buy and he can just keep playing offline at his leisure?

Thanks

I'm afraid not, and in this day and age, those updates are considered normal. Have you looked into purchasing a 4G dongle? Might be a much better solution with a better connection.

I played 64 player BF3 fine on a 1mbit down, 0.1mbit up connection. Ping was about 50 which was absolutely fine. Of course patch day required all day and night downloads but I made do.

As above those updates are completely normal for today’s online games. Especially anything competitive.

Whilst there probably is an offline version I suspect it really won’t be anything like playing v 99 other people.

Get in touch with your ISP because I’m pretty sure your internet shouldn’t be that bad even if your paying for the cheapest package.

I took the laptop to work and downloaded the update and unchecked automatically update this time. Our internet is shocking. 1Mb download speed at best. We live in a rural location and keep being told that they can not justify improving the service just for us and half a dozen other houses. Move house seems like a good solution!

Take your son to work so he can play Fortnite on the laptop while you're doing your day to day thing? ;)

Edit;
Why doesn't he play on a mobile phone (iOS or Android) just for the time being until the internet issue gets resolved? I have an access code for mobile if he wants to use it?

I did actually take him to work once when his school was closed and ended up with them reciting to me that their insurance does not cover children in the building and all that. Couldn't be bothered arguing with them.

Can you get fortnite on android phone/tablet?

I am a bit out of touch with games. The only ones I ever got into was the Myst series. When doing a search I noticed a lot of them are 16+ and 18+ these days, not good for a 11 year old.

I think it may only be for iOS but if you download it from the app store I can give you one of my codes that would allow you kid to play over 4G if the WI-FI isn't the best.

Download Fortnite on your phone, make an Epic games account and I'll PM you over a code to make it all work.

Many thanks for the offer, it is really kind. I have just had a look and it says that fortnite is a few months away from being released on android and we don't have a iOS device.

I will need to keep my hamster wheel driven internet going at full steam for a bit longer.

No bother but if he really wants to play I guess you could buy one of those 4G dongles suggested by agnes and I guess it would be good for yourself to browse the internet as well.

And today, Fortnite wants to download another 1.81Gb. 1.4Gb last week and 1.81Gb this week. I am giving up with this.

I used to live rurally, I was so glad when we moved, I used to get 512k, now we get 200mbit download! :D

We were looking to move recently and my only must was high speed internet.

I truly understand your pain my dude. You could get another line into the house and merge it, but 4g dongle is your best bet.

We live in a rural location and keep being told that they can not justify improving the service just for us and half a dozen other houses.

Are you aware that there can be grants available? See here. Also there's apparently going to be a 10 Mbps Universal Service Obligation from 2020.

And if all that fails, you could band together with your neighbours and DIY. It won't be cheap, of course, but will add value to your houses.
