On the wagon, sorta
after a game similer to this but new (ish) used to love the whole cargo carrier/trader flying through space!

My copy of frontier for the amiga is on it's way from the bay as we speak :) i used to have it and loved it so much so i just brought an amiga 1200 in mint condition for said game im going to max out the 1200 and enjoy frontier how it was ment to be.

by the way the amiga version is classed as being the best version.

I know im sad for the above but i dont care :D

ps also have just become the owner of a mint condition philips monitor for the amiga so im happy now.

I loved it to bits, i can't remember how many hours i sunk into it.

The highlight for me was when the automatic name generator threw up a mission to assassinate myself.

Did anyone ever successfully set up any mining rigs? It was the bane of my life trying to manually land on remote planets for the sake of a small load of ore every month or so.

Played that game non stop, absolutely loved drug running :D

If you want a similar game then either X3 or Freelancer are the best imo, X3 is very very hard to get into with a steep learning curve but is more rewarding and in-depth afterwards. Freelancer is more pick up and play but still has tons of trading and ship customisations.

Personally i found freelancer to be more fun, although it was more built towards combat than trading.

Sadly nothing is close to Frontier. I've tried X3 and it's just too damn slow. Also, for me, the imersion is no where near as good as Frontier.

I'd recommend Freelancer but that's just basically an arcade shooter (and a damn good one at that which throws all kinds of tricks at you throughout the entire game).

There was reportadly a new Elite by David Braben (original author) in the pipeline for the end of last year but it's been pushed back. Apparantly it could be out in 2008 to 2010!

This game is under some freeware license or such now on PC, if you google it you'll find the site where you can legit download it. I got it running on XP with a bit of messing about (you get a virtual memory error if you try running it straight away IIRC).
I lost around a month to it again once I got it up and running last time :p

Oolite is a space sim game, inspired by Elite, powered by Objective-C and OpenGL, and designed as a small game that is easy for users to pick up, modify and expand upon. Almost every aspect of the game can be changed by using simple, free graphics packages and text-editors. The latest version features a new high-resolution collision engine, new equipment and graphics, and many improvements to gameplay

Why not run it on an Amiga emulator on the PC, it will be loads faster.

yes, had it on the Amiga 600, then bought a PC, and bought it for that too :)

X2/X3 is the real ones to go for, forget about Elite 4 :p

That was such a great machine. Mines in the loft somewhere. The original monkey island on something like 10 floppys was just great :)

We had 2 linked up once for turbo lotus esprit, awesome fun.

I know what you mean about using an emulator though, it just does n't feel the same.

What about Frontier First Encounters?
The community exe makes it playable and has more of a story than Frontier, should you wish to delve in to it.

Does anyone remmember the cheat that if you bought an escape pod filled your craft with mining rigs then took off from the surface of a planet in Sol(maybe) then ejected when you got your new ship it still had the mines so you sold them and had a 320ton cargohold class 7 everything was then bought and OMG pirates here I come you could just enter a pirate known space and send out distress signals

Help I've broken down
Now come and have a go if you think ya hard enough

Another one was to buy a passenger compartment, get a passenger then trade your ship for a interplanetary shuttle, it wouldn't let you sell your ship as you had a passenger on bored but you still got the money :D
