any one using PS3 (or xbox) on 1440p?

Hi forum people,

a while ago (before any blasphemus thoughts of consoles ever entered my mind :p ), I bought one of the DGM IPS 27" screens running at 1440p.
Then GTA5 happened, so I bought an xbox 360 to play it on. This reminded me how much I hate the xbox ( I had one years ago, before getting properly into PCs), so I've now sold it, and bought a PS3.

playing the xbox on the DGM was not an entirely pleasant experience, and although my eyes did start to get used to it, it's still obviously way short of the quality consoles usually produce.

the PS3 should be here by tuesday, so I was just wondering, does anyone know of a way to overcome the horrible scaling issues? I previously assumed that if I just set the console to 720p, that everything would work beautifully, one pixel would become four, and I'd happily blast about Blaine county basking in the warming glow of my shiny IPS behemoth....some brief testing with the 360 ruled this out as an option, as the result looked even worse than when the xbox was set to 1080. the monitor only supports 1080 over HDMI, and I'm aware of the limitations of the PS3, in that it physically cannot do higher anyway, but I swear watching Blu-Ray over HDMI from my laptop was orders of magnitude better.

does anyone know of a decent workaround for this? preferably without spending any more money, but a small outlay would be ok next month I suppose. What I'm really trying to avoid is having a second screen on my desk that only gets used for the console, and ocassional coretemp/gpuz duty!

if anyone can help with my dilemma, to some extent or another, I'd be very grateful, and if not, thanks for stopping by to look and maybe considering the idea :)

Why aren't you using DVI-D or displayport?

Set the display resolution to 1440p, 720p in-game and AMD Catalyst will definitely scale it at 1:4 without interpolation.

Any other method will likely result in interpolation e.g. using displays built-in scaler

I theory a 720p video signal running on a 1440p monitor will look OK, since each 1 signal pixel is displayed exactly as four display pixels.

However, unfortunately it doesn't work that way on most (if not all) 1440p monitors due to the way the in-built scaler works - therefore 720p content will still appear as bad (if not worse) compared to 1080p content.

It is also worth baring in mind that not all current-gen console games are actually rendered at 720p (even when you set the console to 720p) - for example COD-MW3 runs at 600p (MW2 ran at 540p) and GTA4 ran at 640p on PS3 (but 720p on 360). In those situations the console does a lot of scaling to achieve the 720p (or 1080p) output signal.

So with a monitor like yours - in many games you are scaling an image that has already been scaled up - not a recipe for good image quality.

Since the 360 is a bit more powerful where it matters compared to the PS3 and GTA4 did run better on the 360 then I'm not sure you will get a better experience playing GTA5 on the PS3. However, rockstar may have made GTA5 very differently to GTA5 and may run great on a PS3.

Personally, I'm really looking forward to GTA5 - but I refuse to play it on anything but my PC. So I'm waiting until next year.

I'm using DisplayPort from my computer to the monitor, no problem there running games at 1440p, but I thought PS3 only had HDMI

don't you worry andi, I'll be pre-ordering on PC as soon as it's announced :) I'm just to impulsive, no way I'd manage to wait that long! the PS3 was a great deal anyway: 500GB console, GTA5, the last of us, and breaking bad series 1 for £199 :D

and yes I think what I am experiencing is due to a mismatch in scaling, I was (optimistically!) hoping that someone would have found a way round this....I might just have to fight dad for access to the TV!

Thanks to both of you for weighing in on the subject :)

I recently moved my PS3 from under the TV in the living room into my computer room. I now have both my PC and my PS3 plugged into my DGM IPS 27". I recently completed "The Last Of Us" on the PS3 and I actually thought it looked pretty good on the DGM. I was so impressed that I decided to order GTA V on the PS3 instead of waiting for it to be released on the PC.
I connected the PS3 to the DGM via HDMI (obviously). I didn't tweak any settings on the monitor or the PS3. I consider myself to be quite picky when it comes to image quality but I'm quite happy with how it looks. However, I AM irritated by the sound of the fan on the PS3 (it's an old "fat" model). It's like having a small vacuum cleaner running under the desk :(

Thanks, hopefully It will be better than the xbox managed in image quality!
and I can fully sympathise with the fan noise issue, there's a massive difference between my watercooled PC, and a second hand, dusty, old style 360 elite :p
