Didnt know really were would be best to post this so please feel free to move.

Just been talking to a company that I get some educational stuff from.

they have a few large contracts on at the moment and are looking at getting agency staff in to do some Cabling cat5 and 6. Now I have never done anything like that other than put rj45 ends on the end of some patch cables. I told the guy that and he said its OK and s going to pass my details on to someone in there team,I said I would have no problem shadowing someone till I picked it up.

I cant see it been that difficult to learn, but can someone tell me what it comprises of. is it just laying cables out, putting up trunking and terminating the cables?

I'd say yes the gist is probably laying cable trunking and terminating, but also remember that it will probably have to connect to patch panels on one end.

I've been watching them do it around where i work recently (upgrade to cat6), you might not like it but i'd say unless you've done it before you're probably not 'qualified'.

For a building you'll be working with dozens of cables hundreds of metres in length, going in lofts etc to run the cable to certain rooms, terminating hundreds of ports.. Unless i'm misinterpreting you and its actually a small job where someone needs a few cables made up and their pcs plugged in...

So unless you're being taught this / working as a team, and not doing it alone, i wouldn't put myself forward if i were you. (again i might if misinterpreted your post)

cheers Joshct.
I will wait and see what they come back with. I did say I have never done it before, but I'm happy to work with someone in the same way as a plumbers mate, until I pick it up.

There is no way I would want to be left alone with a roll of cable and a building and just told to get on with it. Not yet anyways

Its pretty basic stuff really! no need for quals, one of the golden rules when cabling is to make sure you leave a good amount of slack on either end, I've made the mistake of not leaving any, for x period of time down the line and the cable fails at either end :/

Yeah I've watched those guys deploying cabling in the datacentre whilst cable runs and terminating cables into patch panels and Rj45 terminators is the jist of the job its the speed they do it and how tidy they do it which is the tricky part. Bit like me and plastering - I can do it but compared to a professional it looks a bit cr@p

Terminating is pretty easy, but like people are saying, doing it at any sort of decent speed is the problem. Watching the pros is pretty impressive.

I remember back in my first job after leaving school, it was taking me a day to do a vert when terminating on to Krone. :S
