Any OpenSource contributors?

Evening all.

I'm starting to look into contributing towards OpenSource projects, specifically Debian packages seeing as that's the distro I use most commonly.

Does anyone on here contribute to any projects? And if so, any pointers for the fledgling volunteer?

I'm going to be following the advice over at debian.org and subscribing to some mailing lists, and dipping my toe in so to speak. But what's involved when it actually comes to contributing, I take it a CVS system is used? Or is it more: alter source code, compile, test, post bug fix to mailing list?

Primarily I want this to be an exercise to sharpen my programming skills (currently don't know a jot of C, have written varying amounts of Java, C Sharp (!), Python, Perl, PHP, Ruby)... and I've quickly become a jack of all trades and a master of none when it comes to programming. It'd also be good to 'give something back' whilst furthering my own knowledge.

Thanks :)

Heya

Im kind of in the same boat as you, I know a number of language and learnt a lot about algorthims and stuff but need to gain experience.

I did try getting involved in open source development but found a bit too much all at once, but I think the key is to keep on an irc chat room and just try fixing bugs etc, if you ask people what they think someone just starting out could work on, Im sure someone will help you out.

Im not sure if they use CVS, most I've seen are bzr and SVN but it all depends on the project hee hee.

soooo just jump in and stick at it is all i can suggest from someone who tried getting into one open source project

Sadly I don't have the skills to help develop but I have donated to several open source projects. I figure the enjoyment and freedom given to me by these projects deserves a share of the money I would have spent on the robbin' sods at Microsoft and others.

So far I have donated to OpenOffice, LinuxMint, Mepis and a few small individual software projects. :)

Same here. I have given to a few projects too.

I can hack pretty much anything together in Perl/ VB/ and know some C++ and Java, but whilst I would love to help, I think I would introduce more bugs than I would fix :D
