I'm guessing with the size of this forum that there are bound to be quite a few aviators in here. I have done 20 hours in PA-28s up at the local airport but now have ran out of cash - Student budget the excuse again! Just interested to know who else does a bit of flying and how many hours they average a year and so on. I'm determined to finish the PPL sometime after I start working full time but it really does require a bit of commitment. I think it is 12 hours every two years you need to keep up your licence but realistically I don't think this is enough to keep you in good touch. In the meantime I am limited to flight simulator!

Can one easily make a living from flying small planes, i'm thinking clock up 100 hours in a small plane then offer my services on small charter flights, day trips etc, renting the landing slots and aircraft from an airfield.

It would be a nice touch but once you take insurance, maintenance, parking fees it could be running into some serious cash! It really depends on whether there is a big enough demand for it i guess.

I've a PPL with a night rating and about 100 hours. I'm not flying at the minute due to financial constraints. I could afford about an hour a month but in my opinion that isn't enough to remain safe. I'll start flying regularly again when I can afford at least 2-3 hours a month.

The actual requirement to keep your licence current is to do 12 hours in the last year, 2 years after getting your licence, i.e. if you get your licence, you can go without flying for a year but in the second year you need 12 hours P1.

I normally fly PA28 warriors but have time on pretty much all of the different variants from the 140 to the Arrow. I've some time on various other birds as well, few 172's, a 182 and a Maule MXT180.

I can't wait to get back into it :)

Not on a PPL you won't. You're not allowed to fly for commercial gain on a PPL, you need a CPL for that. It's a whole minefield.

IIRC a PPL does not allow you to fly 'for hire or reward', so you would need a CPL which costs lots and requires more than 100 hours. I may be wrong though.

edit: must type faster

I have always had a secret dream of being a helicopter pilot and the reason I have never pursued it is becuase my math sucks really bad....and I have been told I have to have a math mind when it comes to calculating fuels etc. so my dream went up in smoke.

Yea we can see that by the size of your sig :p

Another pilot here. Racked up 550hours-ish now. Was only 240 for all the training before I started flying commercially. Started on the PA28 too in Filton, nice stable aircraft. I think you're best bet too would be to save enough money to complete the PPL in one hit, rather than doing it as you can afford. That will really string it out longer and the currency gained from doing it continuously will really help you advance quicker and easier, hopefully with a pass first time in the exam.

yet another pilot here! I've just finished my commercial training so have a CPL/IR and currently have 208hrs. All I need now is a job!

Flying is an awesome hobby and I recommend anyone who likes the idea to try it, most get hooked!

nice for some! did you do your training in the Uk? I would be tempted to head to usa or canada to do some hours. Are you going to do your ATPL next or can you get a good enough job with just the commercial licence?

CPL/IR with the MCC is a frozen ATPL. I think I've included everything there :p In basic terms you need 1500 hours P1 to unfreeze it.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, I might have left some details out there.

Pretty much spot on Scuzi, but just to be pedantic you must also have passed the ATPL exams. Once you then reach 1500hrs (with a cpl of other things, 500multi pilot time) you can unfreeze it.

Jonny, I did my training at Oxford aviation training. First 6 months were groundschool for the 14 ATPL exams, then spent 4 months in the US for the CPL/ME and then I came back to oxford for the IR. I am yet to do the MCC which I am starting next week.

With a frozen ATPL (CPL/IR/MCC+atpl exams) with the appropriate type rating (737, A320 etc) you can fly as a first officer for any airline. Once you get the hours you unfreeze your ATPL and are then legally allowed to become a captain. However this will also be dependant on the airline to how quickly after you gain your ATPL to when you become a captain.

As to where to do your training that is a very loaded question and depends on a lot of factors! I won't go into them now but am happy to talk about them with you if you like.

I have flown a Bulldog for about an hour. That was fun, especially as, even with it being my first time at the controls, he was teaching me how to do various things such as barrel rolls and then letting me do it.

Probably one of the best experiences of my life :D

Nothing to do with the OP though :o

A bit off topic but i've just seen the RAF advert and it says 'You don't have to be a pilot to fly in the RAF'. But, you do?
