Thinking of purchasing a MacBook Pro. Are there any likely pending upgrades that people know about?

Also:

- is it competent at graphics and video processing, e.g. with Final Cut?
- can the ram be upgraded (e.g. with the stuff supplied here) without voiding the warranty?
- is it capable of running a 30" Apple display at native resolution?

Thanks

No, Jan/Feb with Penryn based chips is next.

- does photo work bloody well here. Video i'd expect to be just as good.
- yes, 4Gb buy from OcUK for 35% of the price.
- I think so. Don't see any reason not to, its full DVI-(Whatever the last letter is here)

Thanks for the comments so far.

Any further thoughts on whether the upgrade to the MBP will be just a chip upgrade ot something more significant?

I think somethings coming out soon as macbook pros have been recently reduced at certain department store e.g. 17" Model is reduced from £1799 to £1599.

So Something must be coming out within the month as they never reduce prices otherwise.

This is what concerns me. Both things I am interested in (MBP and 30" Display) are quoted as being at the end of their product cycles on MacRumours. These things are not cheap and it would be a shame to see them superseded within a couple months.

It's unlikely, I suspect Apple are "correcting" prices to account for the dollar and to get Christmas sales. Parts are likely cheaper too - DDR2 ram costs peanuts and 17" high res laptops were rare when the MBP was launched, now Acer are banging them out for £450.

You'll always be holding off for the next big thing. It's 4 months since the Santa Rosa and 15" LED screen refresh. I doubt there will be any serious updates until at least February, then it'll likely be the 45nm chips on the same motherboard. The original MBP pretty much lasted 15+ months, with a mid period tweak of Core2 chips and a FW800 port on basically the same motherboard.

If I were looking now I wouldn't have any qualms about buying. Had you asked in the Summer I would have said wait for Santa Rosa and Leopard, and we've just had that plus a couple of months to bugfix the new range.

Yeah, I have seen plenty of videos on youtube and the macbook pros seem lightning fast around os x. They also seem to handle games at a good pace whilst running windows via bootcamp.

Do you have any links to benchmarks of the mac book pro with the 8600gt in games such as bf2, maybe crysis?

Also would there be any plans to introduce a mid spec between the macbook and the macbook pro? the macbook is just slightly under par graphics wise for my liking and the macbook pro, well too expensive for us students!
