Around 1GB of cheap PC2-6400 ram is less than £70. I've bought an E6600 and want to get it to around 3.4ghz hopefully. Is there any point in getting expensive ram as the cheap stuff isn't even going to be stretched to its max so should work just fine?

The 800Mhz stuff will take you all the way to 3.6Ghz with the e6600. Personally wouldn't bother (although I have HZ, I only paid £175), someone had the ocuk value 2gb kit at 800mhz @ 4-4-4-12 timings which isn't too shabby. However they only have a 1yr warranty which is something to consider when buying a kit.

not neccessarily true, it can also be motherboard dependant.

I have CellShock PC8000 memory @ 1000mhz and I can't go over 3.5ghz with an E6700!

If you've got a mobo that'll let you run with memory dividers, then no its not. Just run the memory slower than the cpu fsb, and you can overclock it a fair way with the memory (hopefully) in or near it's rated speed. That is, unless you wanna run the memory in synch with the cpu (1:1) The DS3 'frintance doesn't allow you to do this (no memory dividers) but I believe the both abit and asus mobos do have dividers, but don't quote me on it.
