Any point in upgrading 1060 GTX 6GB?

So the upgrade bug is scratching at me and the last thing I have to really upgrade is the GPU.

Now granted the 1060 GTX plays fine with most settings set to high @ 1440P but there are occasions when there are so many particle effects or things going off on the screen that it can look like I am back on my XBOX or watching a slideshow.

So having recently upgraded my main monitor to the Acer Predator 27" 165Hz IPS panel I don't think I am getting the full benefit from this with my current GPU.

The rest of the core of the system is:

I7 5820K
Gigabyte X99-SLI-CF Mobo
16GB Team Group DDR4 Team-Elite-2400 QUAD Channel (4x4GB)

So with the recent release of the RTX cards and their questionable success would it better to just upgrade to something like 1080/ti or go for the RTX 2070 given the current price point for 2070 is priced either at or around the 1080 pricing would this be a better option given that the price of the 2080 and 2080ti are just crazy money?

I haven't seen too many reviews but from the quick (and I mean 30 second scan on youtube) the 2070 seemed to be comparable to the 1080 in a number of tests.

Well if you're not bothered about the ray tracing & DLSS aspects of the new cards, the 1080Ti will give you a bigger jump in performance over your 1060 than the 2070 will.

A £600 1080Ti will be good for at least a couple more years in traditional raster based games at 1440P max settings and comes with 11GB of VRAM compared to the 2070's 8GB.

I’d hold on for a few weeks...you can now get a 2080 for less than a 1080ti on OcUK ..

But the 2080 has issues...

It’s a bad time in gfx card arena at the moment...you have 2 and a half year old tech going for more than current gen and the current gen is crap.

No 1080ti for £600 anywhere ...

That is the thing with this launch, I was all for pre-ordering the 2080's when they were first announced and then the price-bomb was dropped and like the dragons I was out.
I know the 1080/ti cards will still be viable for a few more years to come but knowing my luck as soon as I get one they will be obsolete in 6 months time. The 2070 seemed to be in a happy place performance vs price compared the last gen equivalents.
I think it maybe time to just wait it out, see how things go and upgrade when the pricing is a little more favourable.

Or buy used...as a stop gap :)

i'm not saying they are a crap card now that the new 20XX series cards have come out. It has shown the test of time that it has had been the number one consumer card for gaming for so long and still dominates (obviously assisted by the lack of "decent" comp from AMD - but that is not for this thread) I know market conditions have kept the price of these cards high and missing out on some the recent deals also stings but I guess I will wait to see what happens over the next couple of weeks.

Only because they are priced so well right now compared to the Nvidia side the Vega 64 or 56 would be amazeballs at 1440p... It depends if you have the budget to go 1080ti or 2080 then obviously that is going to have better performance but I would think at 1440p a Vega would be a very good fit - and the drivers are not going to be gimped on it in three months.

I got my Vega64 for £460 but they seem to have jumped up loads now. It's more than good enough for 1440.

Forget the 20 series. Way overpriced, nothing actually uses ray-tracing yet and they seem to be failing all over the place.

Find something that works and sit on it until the next round of GPUs.
