It's my birthday soon and I'm contemplating upgrading my ageing system.

5800x3d
4080
32gb ddr 3200 ram.

It doesn't feel slow, perhaps I'm missing out on some gaming performance, but seems to run everything.

I'm just more concerned about the fact I'm on an ageing / dead platform with no upgradability.

I am quite out of the loop so I don't really know what sort of budget to upgrade cpu/mobo/ram I's need as the 4080 certainly doesn't need to be replaced.

Your motherboard is limited to PCIE-3, but think you only lose a few % performance.

Think your budget would need to be £800 - £1000 just for Motherboard, CPU and RAM. (X3D CPU and 32GB RAM)

I wouldn't bother, the 5800X3D is still a very competent gaming CPU and it pairs well with your 4080.

I'm running a 5800X3D and 5070ti combo which is pretty comparable, I'm having a great experience at both 3440x1440 and 4K with everything I play.

For a genuinely healthy performance bump you're looking at a 4090/5090 on top of a platform switch, unless you play some very CPU limited games (WoW, X4 games like CK2 and Stellaris etc).
