Hi all,

Been itching to upgrade cpu/mb/ram for years now but it seems like desktop cpus have hit a stand still, is there any point upgrading a 3930k running at 4.4ghz? I'm only interested in gaming performance.

I wouldn't think so. You've got a 6 core 12 thread cpu there at 4.4Ghz.

I've got a 3570k at 4.4 and that is still doing dandy.

100% wait for Ryzen before doing anything. Even then you probably don't need an upgrade.

In a word...no.

There isn't a multicore game I've run that even remotely pushes my chip.

Hey OP

I've been running a 3930K @ 4.44GHz since 2012, that's pretty much an almighty 5 years!!

I now have a lack of features and support on my X79 board and that paired with a small bump in noticeable performance to be had, I'm looking to upgrade in the next couple of months.
I'm holding out for Zen, I haven't had an AMD setup since the Opteron Socket 939/940 overclocking days so I'm quite interested.

No idea why anyone would upgrade a 6 core 12 thread 4.4ghz processor

I think the current 6 core processors only have 20% better ipc and don't even clock as well.

Only real reason to upgrade is for new technologies/features like ddr4 and so on and compatibility with newer devices like usb type c. Best bet is just wait to see what ryzen offers if not to just lower intel's prices abit hopefully.

Found myself with the same itch with a 4930K at 4.5, but finding it very difficult to justify moving up to Broadwell-E. I'm hoping Ryzen will be enough to warrant upgrading.

And onboard PCI-E M.2, which i would like 2 of.

You can buy adapters though. You'd also get a decent return on selling your setup so ultimately it depends what you want and/or need compared to what you have. My platform is so old that if I updated now I'd get:

  • M.2 PCIe NVMe (potentially big difference)
  • SATA 6 Gb/s (no difference since I wouldn't use any SATA SSDs)
  • PCIe 3.0 (no noticeable difference for my card but maybe if I move to 1440p @ 144 Hz)
  • USB 3.0+ (haven't needed it personally but might be useful every now and then)
  • DDR4 SDRAM (might help with minimum frame rates, no idea really)
There's almost nothing I'd salvage from my system. If I move to 1440p @ 144 Hz, I'd need a new GPU and would probably want a new CPU. That means I'd need a new motherboard, which'd demand new RAM and push me towards a new SSD. I might need a new cooler if Noctua don't provide a mounting bracket for my old HSF. So all that's left is my BD-RE drive and ancient "random crap" 500 GB HDD (my file server holds all the important stuff).

still rocking an i7 860 @ 3.66 (had to drop from 4) and DX12 massively helps this old girl out ( 980ti/ 1080) but I do feel your pain.

Would love to move onto a few M.2 drives but my PCIe slots are Gen 2... makes no difference from Gen 3 using one card but using the other SLi slot would just kill everything!

as others say wait till ZEN and check second hand market for what prices your core/mobo and fetch :D

You can buy adapters though.

An adapter would mean i'd have to horse it in against my Graphics card, which isn't an option. Then hope that the board supports it, even then, X79 doesn't support NVME IIRC.

I'd also gain passive motherboard cooling, which would be nice. These fans whine horribly (Sabertooth X79).

If Zen is a disappointment, then i don't know what i'll do.. Maybe downsize to to a small and quiet Kabylake system or wait for Skylake-X.

I'm just upgrading to a 3930k :D
Seriously good CPU still even if a little old just run cinebench r15 and and see how little the difference is to new gen

PS I'm sure you can get a ribbon pci-e to move it away from your gfx card

Fan whine just do some maintenance on then and it will go
