I primarily game on PC but I have been doing a lot of overtime this year and I was going to get a console to try and get my girlfriend and others into gaming, so I did a fair bit of research over the year and decided on the PS4. Then I heard about the Steambox, but I’ve not idea when that might actually be released.

Anyone in a similar boat?

I wouldn't bother waiting, Steambox is on Valve-Time. Playstation 6 will be out by the time Steambox even gets a release date.

Steambox is going to take a while to mature IMO. If and when it arrives it'll be based around Linux (Steam OS) and whilst some major developers have now started to back the project, it could be some time before they are a realistic option for casual gamers..

the first boxes I reckon will be for dedicated Valve Steam users, and essentially you could use a decent HTPC with Steam Big Picture and a 360 gamepad to play PC games on a telly - again for those who know what they are doing.

I'd be more inclined to get the PS4 myself...

I don't entirely see the point of the Steamboxes tbh...

All they are are gaming PCs powered by Linux. The Steam OS in a nutshell is Steam running in Big Picture mode.

I know they're really early days and all... but I just can't see the attraction right now.

I'd rather get something like the Gigabyte Brix gaming PC with Iris Pro that is coming out soon and hook a wireless 360 pad up to it.

I'm considering replacing my Intel NUC with one so I can enjoy a few PC games now I've sold my main rig.

The steambox is one of the reasons I cancelled my XB1 pre-order. Why pay for a console and more expensive games when my PC can run them at a higher settings/frame rate and stream them to the living room tv? If the last generation is anything to go by the vast majority of stuff worth playing on the XB1 will appear on the PC (and the Stema sales :) ).The only question is how much will the streaming only version of the steambox cost and how well does it work. Fingers crossed.

I got myself a wireless keyboard/mouse and it sits in my lounge. Long HDMI cable routing under the carpet along the walls. Your main wired keyboard/mouse will work at the same time so you can keep them all plugged in. So in my lounge I have a 360 pad and wireless key/mouse. My sofa gaming has never been better with PC graphics/frames and I am not limited to big picture or just games that use a pad.

You don't have to decide now.

You probably have a few months before PS4 is readily available, has enough decent games and has the glitches worked out.

Steam OS will probably be available in the next few months to download and use on whatever hardware you want and there's bound to be lots of people playing with them reviewing them.

I'll probably going to buy a PS4 in the new year but will probably build a Steam box once the OS arrives.

I'm with you, I can't imagine that too many people will be converted to the Steam box from PS & Xbox and if you already have a gaming pc then surely there is a cheaper way of playing PC games in your living room?
