so I have a r9 290 already installed, I put the 970 into the lower slot and connected pci connections, power button hit and the fans spin while the pc boots, go into device manager and nothing, so i remove the 290 and stick the 970 into the top slot , still nothing! even tried download the drivers but they wont install as it cant find any device related to them, any ideas?

i did try booting a few times , one time the fans just stuck at 100% but still nothing. i bought this second hand so cant do nothing if its broke

MSI Z97-G43 Intel ATX Motherboard

Sometimes these GTX 970's require a Motherboard BIOS update, its worth looking to see if there is one for yours.

bios updated, ill try again now

still nothing, iv only just remembered that the other day when I swapped my z77 to a z97 board when I booted the pc to format it, it loaded into windows as normal! so I just installed the z97 drivers and it all seemed fine , well the amd card works fine inaway. whats the chances a format could sort the issue

Its worth a try....

I texted the guy asking why there is no serial numbers or nothing on the gpu and he said he bought some from an auction some worked, some didn't. guess I took the risk as buying it untested, BUT ... the pci bracket has been cut which wasn't advertised on ebay !!

Did you get it from Ebay? was it advertised as "Spares or Repair" ?

yup from ebay, I collected it from him. it was advertised as spares / untested so my fault , says he never tested it , I have a feeling he tests them all and which ever works he sells of for a proper price then the broken ones he sells of as spares/ untested

And you would probably be right.

If its advertised as untested its broken and they know it.

deffantly. im going to try and contact the manufacturer to see if they'll assist as it would still be within warranty.

If there's no serial numbers on the card and the Pci brackets been hacked to death they won't assist jack.

yup

it wasn't advertised as having the pci bracket hacked, I deffantly over paid for this item now and don't even want to think about it any more

and on the plus side , my sounds stopped working since trying this gpu , awesome!

think ive found something here, looks as if there is a component missing , next to the screw.
if I could find out which is it I could try and find one online and get it soldered on

EDIT - scrap that, I found some pics online and its suppose to be missing one component

Absolutely this.

How long would it take to check a card worth up to £200 second hand?

Minutes, that's how long.

Stick it back on Ebay as "Spares or Repair" Get some money back on it, then go to the Members Market and have a brows. doesn't sound like you will get back what it owes you but its better than having it as a desk ornament, that's all its good for.

file a claim with ebay for it being not as described, that the bracket was hacked. worth a try.

now idk but why would someone rather remove a serial number than get a new bracket and rma it
