Hello.

Basically I am due an upgrade soon and I am thinking of getting a Desire.

Can anyone give me a good reason not to get one? :)

From what I have read so far, it is the way to go.

Thanks.

Wow, that is a lot of replies. Thanks.

Actually, I am on Vodafone, but I prefer the Desire to the Nexus One anyway.

I do like it in Silver though, but I doubt Vodafone will stock it. :(

Guess I will be with Desire as soon as they come out. :)

Been waiting to hear from Vodafone for a while now.

People in the service centres don't seem to know much about it.

Called them last week and they said they knew nothing about it. See it announced on The Register the next day. :)

My only concern is how much they are going to want for it and on what tariff I am going to have to go on.

I'm due an upgrade with voda, can i phone now and pre order it?

Any other questions anyone want me to ask when i phone up?

Will be phoning them tomorrow.

You could phone, not sure how far you will get. :)

Like I said before, the only thing that interests me is how much it is going to cost.

Well, that was a waste of a phone call.

Just called Vodafone to try and get any info.

Guy on the phone knew nothing and said he would probably not know much until the phone was in stock.

He did say that it would be comparable to a Nokia N900 for cost though.

Don't like Apple because while their products look good, they are not the best made.

Also, some of their business practices leave a lot to be desired. Not a fan of the locked down nature of the apps store, for example. Another example is them being able to remove an app off the phone after it has been installed.

As for the other, what is OP? :)

Oh dear, what have I started? :)

As for OP, I am the original poster?

Apple is one of those love-them-or-hate-them brands. The problem with them is that I feel they are too controlling. It is not just sexual content but all content that has to be approved by them.

Unlike Android, which any developer can make an app for and distributed from his/her website, Apple have the final say on anything related to the Iphone. Like I said before, I particularly dislike the fact that they can remove apps from YOUR phone whenever they feel like.

So it basically comes down to this; With Android you are buying into a community, with Iphone you are buying into Steve Jobs' vision.

Which ever one suits you best I suppose.

Well, while I am glad to hear that this thread has helped people, it was never intended as Apple bashing :)

To me, the Iphone was never an option, so it was just a case of looking around to see what else was available.

Up until now, not much presented itself, but the Desire looks like something I would like. In the end, it is not worth getting too worked up about it cause it is just a phone. :)

I agree that it is a little hard to judge without getting your hands on the phone itself.

However, there are some references that can be used to judge particular aspects. The Android OS itself can be tested and so far the results are good.

Also, hardware wise, it is pretty similar to the Nexus One, so again comparisons can be made.

But generally, it is still only a phone, so a detailed analysis is not necessary. Basically, as long as it fulfils my needs then the rest is just a bonus.

It is more a case of a little excitement over finally finding a phone I really like more than whether it is the perfect phone or not.

I'm an iPhone 3G user for over 18 months now and to date it has served me well. My first introduction to the 'smartphone' market and to be honest it does that very well. I would imagine most people don't need true multitasking, they just deal with it because it isn't a problem.

I am, however, at the point where the little niggles with the os and how it operates are starting to annoy me. I really do like the idea of being able to choose a specific song whilst in the middle of something, and not losing it. I like the whole way Android deals with applications and the data and how any app can access it to share between the apps on the phone. I'm also keen on the idea of being able to customise the ui and home screen which you cannot do with the iPhone unless you jailbreak it.

I think I've now got to the point where I've outgrown the closed nature of the os on the iPhone and almost demand that it does what I want, not want Apple think it should be. I have a feeling that aslong as the phone itself is nice to hold and comfortable, then there is no reason why an HTC desire should not be great for me to use and purchase.

Very well put.

Configurability (is that even a word?) is one of the main reason I want an Android phone.

As for flash, I have read that the Desire does support it, but that the phone being tested was jerky and unstable.

So their conclusion was nice in theory, not so good in practice.

However, they did mention that it was most likely a software rather than hardware problem so it might be possible that future update will sort it.
