Any reason not to go Xeon Haswell?

The Xeon E3 processor (Haswell) has 8mb cache and is a lot cheaper than the regular desktop chips. Any reason I can't just buy a Xeon processor and compatible motherboard? This is mostly due to cost savings and comparable specs.

what would be the benefits over an i5 4460 or equivalent?? im trying to stay away from unlocked chips as its for my son and i dont really trust him with an unlocked one

Might run cooler due to the lack of an onboard GPU? Not sure, worth checking the power specs, but I'd imagine that less silicon means less heat.

As for reasons not to; you might want that onboard GPU? I have three monitors and a cintiq, and my graphics card only supports three outputs - but that's probably a fringe case :)

Price really. No IGP and maybe slightly slower on the mhz compared to their i5/i7 counterparts.

I have an Xeon in my media centre, equivalent to the i5 4670 and it works great.
