Hello,

I've not paid much attention to developments on the graphics card market since building my PC (in sig) about 10 months ago.

From what I gather, my current Leadtek 8800GTS 640MB could be sold for anywhere between £120 and £140 on a well-known auction site.

If I were prepared to sell it for £140 (for the sake of argument) and throw in another £30-40, is there another card currently on sale at that price (£170-180) that would provide a boost in performance that would be worth it (noticeable?)? Is there a new series coming out soon that would be worth waiting for?

I game at 1280X1024 so I am quite happy with my current card, but I prefer to avoid falling behind the market too much.

8800GTS 512 would be quite a good upgrade but I'd wait and see what the 9 series are like first, I'm sure your system can cope :).

I'm in a very similar situation, I wanna see how things pan out - but I don't want to wait too long such that my older GTS depreciates too much.

Exactly, there seems to be an invisible tipping point after which depreciation really starts to bite. From what I can see right now, I could keep up with the market at almost no loss at all, hence my question.

What's this 9xxx series and when is it coming out? Any useful links re: performance etc?

Get an 8800 GT, i used to have a GT at that res, cut through everything with ease, and about same as the GTS 512mb at that res to, only at higher resolutions did the 512mb GTS pull away, 9 series are just the same cards (8800's) just the first 8's have been replaced by 9's to make them 9800's, and they have also added an extra SLi connector so they can be TRi SLi'd, so dont waste your money as you can get 9 series cards now, they've been out since November 2006, just called 8800's, and have an SLi connector less.

9600 GT is already out, thats just a cut down 8800 GT, the next in the series is released on Tuesday, the 9800 GX2, thats just 2x 8800 GTS 512mb's gaffa taped together to take on ATi's dual card the 3870X2, and the next card, the 9800 GTX, is released around the 25th, and is just an overclocked 8800 GTS 512mb.

9800 series is set to be a flop tbh, nothing worth upgrading to anyway, check the threads.

And the GTS 640's will be fetching around £100-£110 now.

If you wait to see how the 9800s are, which should only be 2 weeks maximum (unless something's changed) you'll be in a better situation to see what will be better for you. Assuming the 9800s will be a flop, an 8800GTS or even 3850 512MB crossfire (£180 or so) if you're willing, will be pretty good.

With 8800 GTS 512 going for 164 here on ocuk and GT's going for 129.

The older 8800GTS 640's will now sell for sub 100 mark.

No one will want a slower card than a GT for more money.

You have to realistic.

Don't think you could sell the 640M 88GTS at £120. £90 on Bay is fair and quick to sell because it's even slower than an 8800GT 512M which is selling at £120 brand new on Bay. By the way, 8800GT SLI or 9600GT SLI would be the best upgrade options because 8800GTS 512M might not make so much different on real performance even it's around 15% faster. For a little more money for the SLI setup, either 88GT SLI or 96GT SLI, your machine would even beat HD3870X2 or 9800GX2. That's the point for upgrading:) Otherwise, I'd recommend you to stay with what you have and wait for the next gen cards.

Edit: Maybe you should find a seller who could offer trade-in cos you have to pay so much fees to Bay if you are selling your old card.
