Any significant difference ?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi would it be worth upgrading from QX6700 EXTREME TO QX6850 EXTREME, I am not technically minded an dont understand the terms used on the specification.

Would you upgrade from that processor and if yes why?

Or if No why?

Any reasons would be of great help as my brother seem's to like wasting money, If I am wrong and it is worth upgrading I will not get involved..

Thanks

I wouldn't.
Why? - at stock speeds he's only gaining 0.333GHz & he can almost certainly (without knowing his motherboard & RAM models can't be absolutely sure though) overclock to that speed on the QX6700.
Imo it wouldn't be a good return for the £600 it would cost for the new CPU less whatever he could recover by selling his old one (£200?).

Seconded. Not worthy upgrade IMHO. Not enough [high use] apps/games etc now take advantage of the multithreading to warrant more than 2 cores, let alone bother upgrading from 4 cores to slightly faster 4 cores.

It's time for a smids analogy:

You own an Aston Martin Vanquish after much saving. You spot the Vanquish 'S' in the Top Gear Magazine - do you sell your Vanquish to buy the Vanquish 'S'? No! You don't sell a top car to buy a top car, but slightly better. Of course, if we are now talking about upgrading to a DBR-9, then this puts a different spin on things.

Where can you obtain a qx6700 for £200 please let me know as I will buy a few, I have looked and they are in excess of £380-£475. I am not sure whether you are uptodate with current values/prices. If £200 though please let me know where if your statement is to be valid..thanks :)

He means that if your brother sells his cpu thats about the price (200 quid) that he'll get for it now when sold second hand, though i suspect it might be a wee bit more than that, not much though. Hardly a great buy when theres sub 200quid Q6600s that'll clock just as well.

Indeeed - a new Q6700 is ~£340 & I work on a rule of thumb for s/h value as ~2/3 that of new (albeit the QX should have a fully unlocked multi & the plain Q probably doesn't but for most people 10x is enough).
A new GO stepping Q6600 will be ~£165 when reasonable stocks arrive in the UK.
