OK if I had a sound card that is PCI-E ...can I put it in any slot on the motherboard ?

Pretty much, but if you have a video card you'll want to put that into the fastest running PCIE slot (normally the topmost slot) and the sound card the one beneath. If not, just put the soundcard at the top. It should work in any of them correctly anyway

ok thanx Shivy...on my mobo( crosshair formula z ) it has two pci-e x1 slots...cant put it in the top one as the video card is in the way..and beneath it is a bit cramped...is it that the sound card can only go into pci-e x1 slots ?

Yeah I think that would work, not sure though, I had an expansion card like yours once and it worked fine in the x8/x16 slots.

According to your manual, the bottom slot is x4.
