You can spend a lot of money for this. I have not tried it but have read that most THX-certified movie DVDs come with a free THX Optimizer component that can be used to calibrate a TV. Most people have at least one of these DVDs in their collection.
I went down the route of buying an i1 sensor for around £100 and then uaing this with the free HCFR Colorimeter software. You still need to get your head around the reference values and how to best tweak your TV.
I also downloaded some free hi-def test patterns to use in conjunction with the above. Bear in mind aswell that doing this properly can take a good few hours as changing one setting usually affects anotehr so it's a constant process of refinement until you get the compromise as close to standard as you can.
