Pretty much as title really.

I've been playing around with the idea of upgrading for a while, but my Q6600 really seems to be soldiering it really quite nicely. I'm considering just saving up and doing a larger upgrade in a few months time... but it depends on what's going on.

Sometimes, the hardest part about PC's is figuring when to upgrade, not what to upgrade. :p

I just did another search and it seems like Q3 2010 is still all we know. However, some guys did notice that a few new X58 board BIOSs have been released with the i7 970 mentioned, so hopefully it will be an early Q3 launch.

As for affecting the price of low-end i7 chips and i5 - it may well. Most people estimate the i7 970 will cost £400+ in the UK as it will be basically replacing the i7 960's price point. However, it does look like intel are planning to change the lower end of their line-up soon. According to this the i7 950 will replace the i7 930 at its price point. Hopefully, this will mean that 930 chips will drop in price significantly as stock has to be cleared (similar to the recent pricing of the i7 920).

Hmmm.

With my p5n-e basically limiting me to 3GHZ I'm really not sure what to do.

I'm half considering just saying sod it, leave it till they slash the prices soon for the CPU's then upgrading... but then 1156 will change over in Q1.... hmm.

i dont see the need :S as usual they seem to just want to make more money. then again i think p55 x58 are fine for gamers as games dont even use all the cores, and until that happens wont be any need

Sorry, I'm being a bit of a pain in the butt in my own thread. I should've mentioned that I do web dev, photoshop work and want to consider getting in to video editing.

My current machine is

4GB DDR2
P5N-E SLI
Q6600 @ 3GHZ

video editing you would definitely see a difference when rendering, look at any benchmarks for that, even an i5 would be an improvement over q6600 for video editing.

if you could wait, it would be for the best, even if you dont go for the new stuff you could possibly save 100+ altogether.

It wont bring down the price of current CPU's they just make those end of line and replace with new. Only way you will get them cheaper is if sellers (ocuk!) sell them at discount to clear stock to make room for the new.
