hi, i have just bought an MSI K9N Neo-F nForce 550, Athlon 64 3000, 1gig Geil DDRII and an Nvidia 7300. Windows installed ok but i now get a problem with the northbridge heatsink, it overheats like mad. it litterally burns your fingers to touch. when it has been on for about 5 hours idle it shuts down, while using it can shut down between 1-3 hours depending on what you are doing.

my question is is it a faulty board or should i look at the setup of the system?

Is your machine stable? At least if the sink is getting hot it is making good contact. These things are usually designed to run about 60 degrees c mind. If it bothers you that much you can probably use active cooling.

the machine is fairly stable but when transfering large amounts of data it locks. didnt really want to use active cooling as the board is only a week old. think i will just contact support and get an RMA number.

oh and as for it running at 60, when i got home i tested the sink with a thermometer. it was running at 89...........ouch. hence i will just get RMA and return it

Thanks for your suggestions
