Any Surfers here?

Looking to have a long weekend with some mates just camping and hopefully learning to surf with some lesssons.

We had heard about Bournemouth's artificial reef which was supposed to give decent waves but reading up on it today it seems to have been closed due to safety concerns :(

Where else is good for surfing? I've been to Newquay loads of times (not surfing though) so was looking for somewhere different. Or is Newquay the best place to guarantee decent waves?

Abersoch is pretty good in North Wales, quite a few surfing spots. Hells Mouth, Porth Ceriad etc

Some good surf schools as well.

Went surfing at Putsborough yesterday, chilly but not bad considering I was in a summer wetsuit! was horrible drying off outside the car after... :p

Good fun all in all.

I have surfed at quite a few places on the West coast. Most recently was Llangennith which has stunning views but the waves were poor at that time, i'm definitely going to try it again though. Newquay and Perranporth are great, but a long trek. I wasn't impressed with Bude. Putsborough is good. Saunton and Croyde are really good. The time of the year makes a big difference to the wave height. Go to Newquay in January and February and surf if you dare (10-15ft waves), I got battered but it was fun. Mid summer the waves are not so great. Storms out to sea can help make it a bit more lively. I normally surf around October time.

Around llangennith is great you have the main beach but if the waves are too big you can go round the corner to Broughton where it is more sheltered and not as crowded. Also great surf shop at the stop to pick up supplies
