Been lurking around the forums, as I have seen suggested, and have gathered the following specifications for an upcoming build. I already have a PSU, sound-card and HDD, as listed below.

Any thoughts or comments on the selection of components would be much appreciated. All prices are from OcUK.

  • CPU & Mobo: OcUK Motherboard Bundle - Intel Core i5 2500K & Asus P8P67 Intel P67 Mainboard **B3 Revision** £267.98
  • GPU: HIS ATI Radeon 6950 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £179.99
  • SSD: OCZ Vertex 2E 60GB 2.5" SATA-II Solid State Hard Drive £99.98
  • HDD: Western Digital Caviar Green 500GB SATA-II 32MB Cache – OEM
  • RAM: OCZ Platinum 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Ultra Low Voltage Dual Channel Kit £36.98
  • Case: Coolermaster HAF 912 Plus Case – Black £59.99
  • OS: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit - OEM £79.99
  • PSU: Corsair HX520W
  • Sound-card: Emu 0404 24/96 Digital Audio PCI Card
  • CPU cooler: BeQuiet Dark Rock Advanced CPU Cooler £39.98
  • Samsung SH-S223C/BEBE 22x DVD±RW SATA ReWriter (Black) £13.99

Total: £777.89

  • I would have liked 8GB of RAM, but don't feel like I can justify the additional cost.
  • The 2GB version of the 6950 is not much more, but the benchmarks I have seen indicate there is no real benefit to having the extra GB.
  • I hope to use my existing PSU (HX520W) - it's a decent PSU, but I am not if it's good enough for this particular build.

Ok, depends on uses really....

Here are the key things to your bullet points...

Your build is actually quite good :)

Might pick a different HDD, but doesn't matter too much...

RAM, if you're only gaming, there isn't a justification for 8GB, if you do video processing or anything similar, than 8GB may be worth it, chances are however you'd know if you needed 8gb...

Now GPU, I would say is worth the extra money for the 2MB version, check this thread here:

This means you could unlock your 6950 to a 6970 which would actually get you better performance and is a bargain, if you pay the price of a 6950 obviously...

As for power Consumption, your current one should be fine:

Apart from that, your build looks pretty good :)
