any tips on where I can get a hold of lots of broken hard drives?

I want to get a hold of their neodymium magnets to stick onto the oil filter of my car to collect all the metal filings.

car doesn't have a magnetic plug, and it seems that magnet sump plugs cost £20+

I know I'm bound to come across some dead hard drives eventually, but I'm a little impatient with my projects and looking for a source or a contact who comes across a lot of used hard drives.

Why do you think the filter will not be able to cope with any metal particles without magnets stuck to it?

A magnet stuck to the filter is not equivalent to a magnetic sump plug. The sump plug can trap particles before they have the chance to pass through the oil pump and damage the sealing surfaces. By the time the oil is in the filter, it's already been through the pump.

Also, how do you plan on opening the HDDs?

With a screw driver...

Have you honestly never take an HDD apart? I thought anyone remotely interested in computers would have dismantled a dead drive at some stage.

Waste of time sticking magnets on the filter though. Change the oil and filter for quality items at the recommended interval, keep the oil level correct and you shouldn't end up with an engine full of iron filings anyway.

Nope, I looked at one once and considered it but then couldnt be bothered because it had star screws and I didnt have the relevant screw driver plus it looked quite well sealed anyway

Anyway, I cant see why you want to stick HDD bits to your car, seems a bit daft

they're called torx screws and are pretty common these days, come with all screwdiver sets.

One of the screws will be sealed over with the (warranty void if removed) you'll have to puncture the sticker label to get access to it.

I figure, its not worth my time doing this. I ordered a pack of neodym magnets from ebay (hong kong) for around a fiver. I'll research some high temp glue suitable for using inside the gear oil pan. Then just glue the magnet onto the plug, maybe filter.

I realsied now that the engine sump probably doesn't need any magnets, but the gear box definately does.

long service interval 100K miles + no filter is probably a bad recipe.

I put some neo magnets on my sump plug for a year and there was absolutely nothing on the sump plug....as above waste of time if u service regularily......

I wouldnt bother glueing them in, just put them on the inside of the sump, the glue might delaminate over time and get into the oil, the magnet will stay put on its own ,this means you have to remove the sump though and on some cars this is a pain to do.

Just as a side Ive never put magnets in the engine but have had them in the gearbox oem install, inthe sump
