Hello,

Started a new job today in a manufacturing company, I will, after training be responsible for the planning of delivery routes etc.

They are currently running Autoroute 2004 (which is a copy  ). However the laptop with it on has gone bang after an accident with some water. They have purchased a new laptop and tried installing autoroute back on but it won't read the disks.

They sent an employee out to get the newest autoroute and he came back with the AA town to town route software which, tbh is absolute ****!!

Anyone any suggestions of other software that can be used? Any transport managers willing to share what software and processes you use?

The software must be able to accept postcode searches, be able to set multiple drops, label each destination so you can easily see the exact route and destination order.

On a side note, my geography is pretty bad. Any helpful tips on learning the layout of the uk?

Any kind of OS mapping software would be ok... Go on the Ordnance Survey website and they have loads n loads of different scale mapping in electronic format. The A-Z viewer allows you to plot maps etc...

Other than that - Autoroute is one of the best in my opinion.

I speak from a transport engineering point of view - you can't beat the OS A/Cad tiles - but mucho dollar is needed..

Try the OS people first!

If your company has deep pockets then the best system is ArcGIS with Network Analyst with an OS ITN base, this will allow you to carry out route analysis such as the quickest route between multiple drop off points, however you're talking about mucho money, approx £5000.

I believe most major logistics companies use something better than autoroute, although they may be a bit overkill for your needs :p

Autoroute 2007 for about £50.
The other week I went out with a bloke who had to make 10 visits in different areas of the Midlands and while we were having a cuppa I input the 10 postcodes into Autoroute.
He was gobsmacked and bought a copy the following day because he also had blokes working for him.
I saw him in the pub a week ago and he couldn't believe how good it is.
I also told him to use it in conjunction with http://maps.live.com
