Any tricks for fixing an xbox 360 graphics problem?

My Xbox360 had a bit of a fit after I tried playing resident evil 5 on 1080p (whoops!). Initially it just wouldn't display. After resetting and setting resolution back to 720p it then got to the xbox start-ip sphere with x in video and had grey and green chequered pattern on bits. Now it displays only a screen of grey and green checkered pattern. The machine shows 3 red lights (bottom right not lit iirc).

I guess this is a graphics problem - are there any tricks to try and fix it similar to the towel of life trick? Am I right in thinking the issues have been from a badly attached heatsink that only presses against the chip rather than being bolted down?

It's out of warranty - is it worth trying to fix or am I better off sending it to MS for repair or just getting a second hand one?

I think MS still charge £70 for an out-of-warranty repair? That's almost as much as another (arcade) xbox.

I'd buy an x-clamp replacement kit (£5), borrow a heatgun and go to town.
