Ok so i stretched my budget to £1100, i plan to order this later today. This is what i currently have, do you see any worthy upgrades to bring it closer to 1100? I was thinking of changing the cpu cooler, but wasnt sure what to, or is the Sunbeam fine? If so ill just stick with what i currently have and save some cash.

unless you really want quad core how about dropping to the tri core black edition, then changing the graphics card to the 4890.

I purely want it for gaming, thought the quad would offer more future proof than the tri. Regarding the graphics card, i only play on a 20" monitor at 1650x1050 and read that 4870 is perfect for that res

extra core against an extra 2, depends how long it takes for them to be used properly i guess.

you have the 1gb version of the 4870, which will be overkill for a 20" screen.

if it was me i'd go for either a 4850 for the current screen or 4890 in case of a screen upgrade.

So you would recommend something like this?

Which would leave me with cash to spare to upgrade to a 22" or 24" monitor. I dont fancy buying a new monitor yet though, not a fan of dual setup and dont want to let my current one just sit there and collect dust.

Alternative is the 4850

i'd go for the first spec if it was my money.

edit:

forgot to ask the obvious question of what its going to be used for, if gaming is part of that do you go with modern games.

is it worth upgrading the cpu cooler?

Did mention above its purely for gaming, both old and modern games.

nah that cooler seems to be pretty decent.

yeah saw about the gaming, just wanted to clarify as some people upgrade so they can run older games at a higher res/better quality, others want to be able to run newer games/new games at a higher res/better quality, sounds like your in the 2nd category so i'd stick with the 4890.

The Sunbeam should be fine really. You could upgrade to the Noctua cooler which is better, but the Sunbeam is gonna do a good enough job really.

If you upgrade to a 24" monitor, you dont have to go dual screen, just sell the old one on. Im getting a new monitor next week and selling my current one to a girl I live with, she only has a tiny laptop and wants a bigger screen for watching films on... works out good both ways :)

This is what ive got as of now, not 100% sure if ill get the monitor this month though since it is £120 over my orignial budget, but if i sell my old monitor for £100 or more then it covers the extra cost.

I dont think i need x2 500GBS, i never have a lot of games installed at once, so the 320 seems perfect for the OS & some games.

could swap the psu to the Coolermaster Real Power 620w Modular Power Supply
(£79.98 inc VAT £69.55 ex VAT) will be fine for the system.

maybe go for the Antec 900-2 Nine Hundred Two Ultimate Gaming Case - Black (No PSU) (£102.99 inc VAT £89.56 ex VAT) as you were originally looking at the 1200.

or even the Antec 300 Three Hundred Ultimate (£45.99 inc VAT £39.99 ex VAT).

hm, changed the psu to the one you suggested, if i opted for the antec 300, means i can get the monitor within my budget, £1,104.63 total.
Question is how good is that Antec 300?

heard good things about the 300, worth checking out the case forum.

cases are really the most personal part of a rig, so depends if you like the looks for starters :).

Runt, imo you were better off with a Quad Core cpu due to (as you stated) futureproofing. No games use 3 cores, only 2 or 4. So when the majority of games use 4 cores you'll be missing out on one - however now you have one extra.
