Any usefull free software for a 11yr old?

My mate has bought his daughter a laptop for Xmas, and was asking about some usefull free software.
The laptop is a low spec, just for school and stuff.

open office would be one i think, if she will be using it for school work

Yup, open office for sure. Also Avast! Anti-virus and Spyware Blaster. Adobe reader, all the usual gubbins...

If she's anything like my 10 year old she'll complain about Open Office not being the same as what they use at school and he'll end up buying Office 2007 Home and Student Edition.

Artrage has a free version and thats a great drawing program that kids tend to like
