whats the best way to clean out the inside of an inter cooler ?. the inside is coated with thin oil , as the breather system had failed on the car.
The engine then deposited the lovely oil gunk back into the intake system, covering the air filter, pipe work , and MAF , which can cause the units to fail ....

Edit i want to be able to clean it out still attached to the car if possible

At work we have a parts cleaner which we just leave running over night to flush them out. I'm sure soaking in petrol will have the same affect.

It will evaporate before doing anything useful.

Using an aerosol of brake cleaner probably won't be very effective for the reason you state.

However I used brake cleaner on my Fiat when I bought it as it had a lot of oil in, but I had a 5 liter container of it so threw quite a bit in and swilled it around. It did an excellent job, and a blast through with an airline ensured it was all gone.

We buy it in 5l bottles and fill 1l bottles with presuriser things on them, they don't evaporate when cleaning oil but do when cleaning brakes.

It quickly disolves the oil, and any left over brake cleaner will eventually evaporate of give it a blast with an air line will evaporate instantly.
