Any way to download most recent compatible versions of apps?

My girlfriend has an old iPad (a 2012) that she uses for streaming video only. Problem is many of the video streaming apps she uses have become incompatible in the past year — for example, Amazon Prime Video and the ITV Hub. I'm going to get her a new iPad later this year for her birthday. Is there a way I can extend the life of this iPad until then, by downloading and installing the most recent compatible versions of those apps? Or is there any other way of doing the same?

There's good news and bad news.

Good: You can try checking the purchased section of the app store and it will give you a list of your apps. Click the download icon next to the app and it will hang for a bit before suggesting downloading the last compatible version with your OS.

Bad: Even if you manage to get the last compatible version, there's no guarantee the app is still functional. Apps like the Youtube app usually lock you out after a number of versions.

An easy way of explaining it is that if you have historically had the apps downloaded when they were compatible with an Apple ID at any point you can go into your purchased section within the app store, and you will get a prompt allowing you to download the last compatible version. As mentioned though, there's no guarentee the last version of the app will still work with the service it's intended for.

If you've never downloaded the app before and it's now incompatible, your out of luck unfortunately.
