Looking at buying this if i can get it cheaper than £600

My missus works in a school as 6th form manager. She looks after 6th form kids etc. Doesn't teach as such.

Would that help :(

could possibly get an acedemic license, not sure of the terms & conditions however...could you not get a nice 6-former to get it for you (strictly a bit dodgy, but it's a grey area)

That sounds a bit risky, thing is if the missus bought her i know she could use it further down the line for when she goes self employed.

Is it a no no buying it second hand from ebay?

Do you need the newest version. Still use v7 at work. Does what it needs to.

I don't know anything about PS tbh, i would like to be able to join in with some of the banter in GD and shop some photos.

Make logos, leaflets, letterheads etc for my business (Ie my business, not a designer :) )

Software for students is sold to people if you have kids at school.

You could probably get away with the free alternatives then. Gimp or Paint.net. They're nowhere near as good, but will probably be more than sufficient for what you need them for.

Can't harm you to download them and sample them.

As UnworthyBean says, try the free alternatives first. But you won't need anything better that Photoshop7.

I wouldn't use Photoshop for layout work. It's text handling is frustrating at best.

Yeah you shouldn't use Photoshop for layout work really. Better off with a vector graphics app like Illustrator or a full layout app like InDesign.

You know - people keep on posting things like this.
There is no "grey area".
If you're over 18 and purchase alcohol for somebody under 18 - it's illegal.
If you're over 18 and purchase a knife for somebody under 18 - it's illegal.
If you're a student, purchase student licensed software and then give it to a non-student - you are invalidating the license and the new owner has software no more legal than an illegally downloaded copy.

There is no "grey area".

If Paint Shop Pro hadn't been butchered beyond belief by Corel, I would have highly recommended that instead.
PSP 7 & 8 were strong contenders, then it all turned into Photo Shop Pro.. grrrrf.

I tend to use the GIMP for most stuff, it will even import PS brushes (and there are a lot of free ones on the 'net)., and has a active community developing tutorials for it as well, which is a great plus when you get stuck on how to achieve something.

It's not as user friendly as PS, but if you can't justify the £600+ for PS (I can't, much as I would like too) it's a great alternative.

The only drawback of GIMP is that it does not support CMYK, only RGB. If your not regulary sending work off to print, shouldn't pose too much of a problem though.

If your designing a logo, you may want too check out a free vector-based program. Logos are generally done as vectors but for personal use, may not pose a problem.

Inkscape is pretty good for vector graphics, I didn't have much use for it when I tried it but what I saw looked pretty good. Worth a try since it's free.
