My Fiancée has finally succeeded in destroying her iPhone. After numerous drops (front and back both cracked) she finished it off by dropping it in the toilet. She has purchased herself a Huawei Ascend Y300 this morning and would like her contacts from her old phone. Is it possible to extract the info from the iTunes backup? If so, what's the software like for the Y300 to import them?

From what i know, the iTunes backups is just a collection of SQLite database files (real filename conversion), so you should be able to open the contacts database with a SQLite browser and then browser the tables for the contact list.
Granted, you'll need to manually copy out the details but it's a free solution.

Alternative there are a number of applications (iStonsoft iPad/iPod/iPhone Data Recovery, Wondershare Dr.Fone for iOS) that are suppose to be able extract contacts (as well as texts, photos etc) from iTunes backups to various formats.

Yeah I did see some stuff about just browsing the SQL database but was hoping for something which would make the extraction a little easier so I don't have to mess about with text files and formatting. I'm assuming the free version of the linked software is somewhat restricted?
