So no new phones are worth it for me to upgrade to due to my requirements

However I'm finding my old phone (probably due to 1gb ram) quite slow
It's always laggy but wasn't when I bought it.

It was even factory reset so it must be almost u suitable for the android version it is running
(android 4.4.2)

As I don't want to change the phone is there ANYTHING that can actually help this?
Even downgrading the OS?

Depends on the phone really, there is potential to overclockers it but that will reduce the battery life and make it run hotter.

Or can try a different bootloader/firmware/room on it that's very minimalistic.

Assuming it's Android ofcourse.

As above, it depends on the phone. If it was a popular phone, then there will be custom ROMs which can make a difference.

Since it only has 1GB of RAM, I am guessing the rest of it won't be great so not much you can do other than wipe the cache, uninstall apps you don't need and possibly root and flash a custom ROM (but that just introduces a whole load of new niggles)

Do you have it turned off when charging?

It's just that if I left my phone on (even when charging) after a while it became really laggy and I had to power it off and back on to get back into some form of normality and that has half the RAM and (if I remember correctly) an older version of android.

So, have you tried turning it off and back on?

Well looks like this phone is difficult to root on 4.4.2..

And sorry I didn't mention, yeah its Android

I've been watching ram usage and it is definitely this.
I've disabled as much as I can (without losing things I use a lot (messenger app uses a lot but I just or all the time)

The above has helped to go above 100mb free (this seems to be usable but still slow)

There are various needless apps I can't disable which root would sort so May look into any way to do this

Yeah it gets switched on and off often

And it is an old (2012) phone. But it was fine back then so all I can assume is 4.4.2 runs more services.

Its a Motorola Droid razr maxx hd

I like this phone, it's nice to hold, fantastic battery , nice big nled.
Only way a phone would be better was of it had stereo speakers.

Seeing as I only use my phone for basic stuff, YouTube being probably the most demanding.. Don't see worth in upgrade when no phone offers any more "features" and less battery
My work phone is a galaxy s6 and it's only benefit is it isn't laggy. But on flip side. It's dire on battery.
Just seems a waste to pay money to swap from slow phone to battery poor phone when seems like I should be able to simply free up ram

I had a oneplus that went faulty and thus dropped back to this

Fresh ROM should do the trick. My old HTC with 768MB of RAM is OK after a fresh ROM flash. It does bog down loads though over time, and nothing I have tried sorts it apart from re-installing the ROM.
