Any way to stop Windows Media Player interfering with my music files?

I'm getting unbelievably annoyed (again) with WMP; despite me disabling every option in the settings relating to it updating my files, retrieving info on my files and so on, it still seems to insist on adding album art to everything, which isn't even correct. I don't even want it to create a music library, but there's seemingly no way to prevent that either. Atrocious bit of software.

In any case, does anyone know of a way to stop WMP from doing whatever it wants? I only use it for video (Winamp for music), so I'd prefer not to render it completely dead. I just want it to stop interfering.

Only thing I can suggest is blocking the wretched thing with a firewall.

Making all the files read-only might help. No guarantees.
