Greetings, i would consider myself somewhat of a veteran when it comes to Windows 2000 and 2003 server, we have recently received copies of Windows 2008 and Exchange 2007 via our action pack, i have also been tasked with a migration of all our in house services onto new hardware.
I only have theoretical knowledge of Windows 2008 and for the most part it looks promising which leaves me with a decision whether to go Windows 2008 Server Standard or Windows 2003.
I have the following applications that need to be catered for from the off being
Active Directory
Exchange
File Services
Print Services
Sage CRM
Opera Accounts
Hosting of a company website both intranet and extranet
I only have two servers for the initial deployment, one being a HP DL380 G5 and the Second being a HP Dl360G5
The HP DL380 G5 would be the primary domain controller, email server, Web Server, SQL Server as well as providing file and print services
The DL360 would be used as an application server running Sage CRM (Database Hosted on Primary Server) and Opera Accounts.
Now there are some caveats mainly related to Sage CRM
1. It is not recommended it be installed on the same machine you wish to host a website on
2. It's database can be installed on a seperate server, in this case being the primary server.
Now my only concern is the location of the web server, if i was to go down the Windows 2008 route i was considering using the built in Hypervisor and virtual machine functions, and installing Windows 2003 Web Edition to the virtual machine which is also part of the action pack this would in turn act as the webserver.
If anyone has experience with Windows 2008 id appreciate your comments, i wouldn't normally consider such an immature OS for a production environment but its whether i do this now or in 6 months time when there is greater confidence in the product.
Regards
