Just wondering as i've got a dlink usb wireless thing for my pc thats connected to the router but dont fancy forking out £60 to buy an official MS one. Will any old one work to use live?

No, you either have to use an official MS USB stick or an ethernet wireless bridge (or similar configuration).

There was a place selling them for £35 this week. (the official ms ones).

You can buy a wireless access point for £30, no point in buying the official m$ one when you can get a suerior 802.11n one.

But what then connects to the xbox? Isnt a wireless access point similar to a wireless router?
Damn i hate netorking related things

I've got mates who've used Ethernet wireless bridges, and they can be a bit fiddly to setup and require another plug socket.

I bit the bullet and got the Microsoft one and think its worth the price. You just plug it in, and you're off, few seconds to put in the ssid and security settings, and then you can just forget about it. The signal strength is very impressive as well.

ITs worth the £60 mate, i just bought one today and its literally plug and play. Ive got no security on our network so it found the network without any setup at all.

They're incredibly easy to set up but personally I'd save some money and buy a WRT54G router, flash it with DD-WRT and set it up in wireless bridged mode. £30 in the right places :)

Same here (i got one yesterday). Although I had security, I just entered the WEP key and off we went.

I have a Linksys WRT-54G router and wandering what I have to do in order to use a standard wireless dongle, something like a Belkin. Is it possible? I've plugged one into the rear and it shows disconnected

If you mean USB dongle then no. As above you either need the MS one or a wireless bridge type device connected to the CAT5 port which needs to be configured for your WEP/WPA/Whatever setup.

I have a WRT-54GL (basically a WRT-54G v3) and using the official wireless adapter it works a charm. I just plugged it in, started the 360, entered my WEP key and everything else was automatic (DHCP and DNS)

Lol, 1, You aren't going to get a draft 802.11n ap for £30, 2, 802.11n isn't out yet, so unless you have a draft 802.11n router, getting a 802.11n ap is absolutely pointless, because not only will it only run at 802.11g, but it may not work properly with the final 802.11n when it's released in the future ;).

Well yeah it was assumed that you would have a 802.11n router if you were going to buy a 802.11n bridge. You can get 802.11n wireless adaptors for £60 which is the same as the m$ one.
