I never usualy do upgrades, always a fresh install. But im tempted to upgrade my Vista computer to 7 as i have been using it at work and its a good improvement. Anybody done an upgrade? If so how did it go? Did all drivers and software carry over fine?

Thanks.

Some upgrades will go fine and dandy, others will fail horrifically.

The general concencious is always do a fresh install, but I think 7 gives you the best chance of getting away with an upgrade to date.

There's an article on winsupersite.com about in place Vista to 7 upgrades - which was meant to be pretty painless.

But I'm with Memphis all the way...Clean install every time.

I did an upgrade from Vista x64 to Windows 7. Had a few problems in that the Win7 install wouldn't run cause I'd moved my user profiles and shared folder onto another disk but once I moved them back onto C: it installed and upgraded without any problems. I then moved the users profiles and shared folder back to where they used to be.

One word of advice about the upgrade is that some applications needed to be re-registered and some other needed to be removed and re-installed. It should flag up a warning beforehand but I chose to ignore it and had to do the remove/re-install afterwards anyway.

Done 2 upgrades so far. Vista Basic to Win7 Ultimate and Home Premium to Ultimate. Installed bitched about a few things which were resolved, whole transition was flawless. Both were 2 low powered laptops.
