A friend was asking me if you own a licensed firearm is it legal carry with you?

I presume if that means carrying on your person as you go shopping, then no. But if it's in your car is that allowed?

You need a reason eg on way to range / shop / hunt / shoot

Carrying it around for no reason is naughty, you say firearm not shotgun.

I'd guess that it's okay to have it in your car or on your person if you have a good reason for it. A good reason being taking it for repair, and so on.

meet a 70 year old granny, who swore blind she never went anywhere without her Betsy.
Turns out Betsy is a .45 smith and Weston cannon, this women could barely see and she was carrying that around, lets just say we left pretty quickly

The only time you can carry a a legally owned firearm is when you are going to and from the range/place of use and home. You can probably get away with place of purchase/repair etc.

Ammo and firearm should be separate and secure, and never left unattended.

So no you can't leave it in your car, you can carry it in your car, but you should have a good reason to do so, as stated on your firearms certificate.

Wow, we're all awfully quick this evening......

I thought you could only get a shotgun license in this country anyway.

No firearm is anything basically more than a shotgun that holds 2 cartridges 3 in a pump / auto, there's loads of variables including air weapons over 6 / 12 ft lb and you can own perfectly usable antique rifles without a license.

Holding a firearms license is pretty much specialist, you have to attend safety courses and have a reason for each firearm you want to own.

I own a shotgun, but unlike the mainland of the uk, it has to be registered on a firearms certificate. Same for air rifles, i can carry it in a case/slip in public on the way to the land where i shoot locally. But in vehicles i keep it in a locked box. Here in northern ireland certain high risk members of the public such as prison staff, lawyers, serving/retired armed forces personell and police officers can carry concealed pistols that theyve been issued with for personal protection.

air rifles is 12ft/lbs but the rest is correct, as long as you can proof beyond reasonable doubt that you need the weapon you can get a permit, know a few gillies with .308 and .338 rifles up in Scotland.

Most weapons when carried in public or in vehicles require the firing mechanism and ammunition to be carried separately.

BASC fought and won a charge for someone leaving their shotgun in a car, they proved it was a safe place to leave, may be different for fac

I think it's different, you can probably leave a shotgun or an air weapon without too much worry because the usage restrictions are a little less strict but I think you'd be in trouble for leaving a class 1 unattended, as you can only really shoot in the places designated on your certificate.

You my be right and hunting rifles may have the same clearance, but I don't plan to test it any time soon.

...Snip...

Good idea, sadly not true. You need to be a member of a home office approved club, and most of them will teach safety before you can become a member, but not all.

Holding an FAC is not really specialist, just expensive, target shooting is a good enough reason to hold most firearms, and it's a fun and very safe sport, sadly the popular press don't approve, so clubs keep quiet and the only way most people will ever find out about shooting, is when something goes terribly wrong.

Hopefully the olympics will raise awareness a little, and maybe help ease the current firearms legislation.
