I would like to get involved with a project or even start my own... Just out of interest, what projects have you been involved with? Do you still contribute? and would you recommend doing it?

I've made a developed a couple of open source projects under GPL, bit dead now though sadly (although just me, not much of a project team involved)

USB Encryption Software: http://freeside.dcs.hull.ac.uk/~jackc/miven/
Usenet Client: http://piven.sourceforge.net/

Post-release ive had very little time and not bothered to maintain the projects, so they are just as is.

You can contribute in many ways to existing projects though. I suggest finding a project that interests you (search sourceforge or freshmeat), and speak to the developers, if not coding there are lots of things you can do to help like documentation or language translations.

If you have the time on your hands, you can always start a fresh project yourself. Definitely recommend getting involved with it, even if its just a temporary thing. Gives you something to do, and always looks good when applying for IT jobs :)

Hope that helps.

Very little to be honest, though I did consider it for a while. Personally I would go for a large project like Debian as they have a pretty strong community and I think it'd be broad enough to maintain your interest for a while.

My programming skills, while not absent, aren't great. But I am an experienced tester, and experienced with Linux. If a testing opportunity presented itself, I'd seriously consider contributing long term.
